Monday, July 31
Physiologist to describe insulin-resistant heart maladaptation
Dr. Romain Harmancey, assistant professor of physiology and biophysics, will give the Department of Biochemistry presentation, “Molecular Basis of Postischemic Maladaptation in the Insulin Resistant Heart,” at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 31, in classroom 3A.

Neonatal cardiac surgeon to detail heart defect repair
Dr. Ali Dodge-Khatami, professor of surgery and director of neonatal cardiac surgery in the Children’s Heart Center, will give the Department of Surgery Grand Rounds presentation, “Muscle-sparing Left and Right Axillary Thoracotomy for Epicardial Pacing and Transatrial Repair of Congenital Heart Defects: More Than Just a Cosmetic Sales Pitch,” at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, in room CW 106 of the Classroom Wing.

Physiology postdoc to cover alcohol abuse, heart failure
Dr. Alan J. Moulton, postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics, will give the Physiology Seminar Series presentation, “Alcohol Abuse and Heart Failure: Impairments in Cardiac Remodeling,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Open house events to christen new SOM building
All Medical Center faculty, staff and students are invited to an open house at the new School of Medicine building from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4.
The building will be formally dedicated during an invitation-only ribbon-cutting event earlier that day. A ribbon-cutting for the Simulated Operating Room on the fourth floor of the new building also is scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 4.
Everyone also is invited to a Community Open House at the new building from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Aug. 5. For more information about these events, email Laura Hodge at lhodge@umc.edu.

UAB professor to give Physiologists in Training Lecture
Dr. Suzanne Oparil, Distinguished Professor of Medicine, professor of cell, developmental and integrative biology, section chief of vascular, and director of the Vascular Biology and Hypertension Program in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, will give the Department of Physiology’s Physiologists in Training Distinguished Lecture, “My Road to Academic Cardiology,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Chancellor, vice chancellor to speak at faculty meeting
Dr. Jeffrey Vitter, University of Mississippi chancellor, and Dr. LouAnn Woodward, vice chancellor for health affairs, are scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).
Vitter and Woodward will provide an update on the university and the Medical Center for the next fiscal year. The agenda also will include a recognition of faculty with 20 years of service.
